Only a slight distance from the castle is the city of Rukram, whose mayor is a trash-talking Dhampyr with a bone to pick against the viscount. Chief among its residents, however, are the viscount's family-his twin children Relic and Ferret. All sorts of colorful characters, from fellow vampires to witches and werewolves inhabit Waldstein Castle. His accepting and merciful character has naturally attracted many nonhumans to the island in search of a place to call home. The island of Growerth in northern Germany is home to Viscount Gerhardt von Waldstein, a vampire who rules the island as the Master of the Night. Unable to reveal his fate, Shuutarou resolves to watch over Aoi from a distance-but is there any point to protecting a loved one whose only wish is never to have been parted? For some reason, she is drawn to vampires, both in and out of her job as an investigative reporter. With a mission to hunt down any superhuman dangers to Tokyo's populace, Shuutarou is surprised to frequently run into Aoi. He is enlisted into the military's special unit, "Code Zero," alongside fellow monsters who hunt their own kind. Unbeknownst to Aoi, Shuutarou had been attacked and involuntarily transformed into a vampire. Unable to cope with this tragedy, Aoi clings to the hope that Shuutarou is still alive since his body is never returned to her. Yet, despite his vow, she later loses him to the battlefield.

And so, when Shuutarou is drafted as an escort for dangerous goods, Aoi implores him simply not to die.

When Aoi Shirase learned that her brother was killed while in service to the army, only her childhood friend Shuutarou Kurusu was there to comfort her. Regardless of who she pledges herself to, can she expect anything but the worst treatment from a predator hungering for their prey? This makes the brothers pause, but now she has to follow through on her words. She struggles against their hold, and finally protests that it should be her choice as to who gets to suck her blood. The Sakamaki brothers-Shuu, Reiji, Ayato, Kanato, Laito, and Subaru-seem set upon making a communal meal out of her, unconcerned that she will die on her first day in their home. Each new arrival looks as striking as the last, but they all appear to be vampires as well. Desperate for rescue, Yui screams and attracts the other occupants of the house. The handsome stranger complains that she woke him and asks for a treat in compensation, flashing fangs in his mouth. She is prevented from calling an ambulance by a sudden aberration in her heartbeat, and in that moment of hesitation, the person whom she presumed to be dead sits up and speaks! In what little light there is, she notices a figure sleeping on a couch and approaches him, making several observations in quick succession: he is remarkably good-looking as well as cold to the touch, not to mention he is not breathing.

Entering the foreboding mansion belonging to distant relatives she has never known, she steps into evident darkness. Yui Komori's priest father leaves her behind in Japan when he accepts a new assignment in Eastern Europe.
